As it is Shrove Tuesday this week, I thought an image of lemons was appropriate to remind us of pancakes! To me, hot and freshly cooked, with sugar and lemon is one of the best ways to enjoy them. The French call them crepes and I have had them in France with Calvados and sugar. What a shame we don’t have them more often.
Lemons are grown in many countries and many of us have seen them in our Mediterranean travels. This image was shot in the Sorrento area of Italy. Lemon trees, like orange trees, carry flowers and fruit at all stages of development throughout the year, the ripe fruit being gathered in the early months of the year.
This astringent fruit adds its flavour to many dishes, both savoury and desert, to say nothing of the millions of slices that are added to drinks.
